Review: "...this one actually helped to recreate the same PH level the sperm are used to"

Review: "Swim spermies, swim!"

We wanted to share with you this review taken from the Conceive Plus page on Amazon.com: "This product maybe a little expensive but it's totally worth it. I bought the conceive plus lube when my husband and I decided to start our family in March 2011. I had read that normal lubes killed sperm and this one actually helped to recreate the same PH level the sperm are used to in the scrotum so they can survive longer when trying to reach the egg. Other fertility lubes, such as PreSeed are advertized only as a vaginal moisturizer. I became pregnant the first cycle we used this lube. My Husband wasn't too crazy about it because it dried up faster than regular lubes and wasn't quite as slippery, but it still got the job done. I contribute getting pregnant so quickly to using this lube during the fertile part of my cycle. I would and have recommended this lube to my friends that are also TTC their little ones. And we still have a ton of it left and will continue to use it as we TTC our future little ones."

Why do regular lubricants affect sperm survival and fertility?

Most conventional lubricants have a pH level and osmolarity that is toxic to sperm, causing them to lose motility and die before reaching the egg. Regular lubes can also create a hostile vaginal environment that further reduces sperm viability. Fertility-specific lubricants are formulated to match the pH and osmolarity of seminal fluid, creating a sperm-friendly environment that supports conception.

What is the difference between fertility lubricants and vaginal moisturizers?

Fertility lubricants like Conceive Plus are specifically designed to support sperm survival and are used during intercourse on fertile days, while vaginal moisturizers are general-purpose products used for ongoing vaginal health and dryness. Although some products market themselves primarily as moisturizers, true fertility lubricants are formulated with sperm-supporting properties that regular moisturizers do not provide.

Does the FDA regulate fertility lubricants?

Fertility lubricants are regulated by the FDA as medical devices, typically classified as over-the-counter products. Products like Conceive Plus must meet safety and quality standards, though they don't require the same extensive clinical trials as medications. Consumers should look for FDA-cleared or registered products when selecting a fertility lubricant.

How should I use fertility lubricant during my fertile window?

Fertility lubricants should be applied to the penis or vaginal opening immediately before or during intercourse on the days you're ovulating or trying to conceive. Most fertility specialists recommend using these products only during your fertile window (typically the 5 days before and day of ovulation) and following the product's specific application instructions. Always check with your fertility clinic for personalized guidance on usage.

Can fertility lubricants increase my chances of getting pregnant?

While fertility lubricants create a sperm-friendly environment and may support conception, they are not a treatment for infertility and don't address underlying fertility issues. Studies show they can be helpful for couples with unexplained infertility or those using natural family planning methods, but results vary by individual. If you've been trying to conceive for over a year (or 6 months if over 35), consult with a fertility specialist regardless of lubricant choice.

Are fertility lubricants covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans do not cover fertility lubricants as they are considered over-the-counter products rather than medical treatments. However, some fertility clinics may include them in their treatment protocols or recommend specific brands. Check with your insurance provider and fertility clinic to determine if there are any coverage options or if you can use flexible spending or health savings accounts (FSA/HSA) to purchase them.

What should I look for when choosing a fertility lubricant?

When selecting a fertility lubricant, look for products specifically formulated to match seminal pH (7.0-8.5) and osmolarity, and verify they are FDA-regulated medical devices. Avoid products with spermicides or ingredients known to harm sperm motility, and consider consulting your fertility clinic for recommendations based on your specific situation. Read product reviews from verified purchasers and check expiration dates before use.
